Resources for employment

Documentation tailored for Catholic educational institutions, ensuring alignment with faith-based values and legal standards.

The Bishops’ Memorandum

Before any recruitment process begins, governors and directors should read the Bishops’ Memorandum and seek guidance from their diocese if appropriate.

The Bishops’ Memorandum on the Appointment of Staff in Catholic Schools sets out the Bishops’ collective requirement on all Catholic schools and academies in relation to staffing. Catholic schools and academies are required to use CES model contracts of employment, model workplace policies and associated model employment documents. All those responsible for the running of Catholic schools and academies must ensure that they are familiar with the Bishops’ Memorandum and comply with its contents.

Legal and HR

We do not provide legal or HR advice to schools and academies. If you have any questions in relation to the documentation on these pages, please contact your diocese and they will be able to assist you.  Catholic schools and academies may wish to look for appropriate legal, HR and recruitment suppliers on the Churchmarketplace website.

Recruitment

We have produced guidance on the recruitment of staff for Governing Boards in England and Governing Bodies in Wales. We recommend that the recruitment process set out in this guidance is followed by Catholic schools and academies for all appointments. The guidance also includes a checklist of the steps taken and the documents that will be required.
